Unlike standard amber kapton polyimide film, our black PI film is manufactured with black pigment incorporated directly into the polyimide polymer matrix — not surface-dyed. The colour is permanent, heat-stable to 400°C and will not fade or transfer even under prolonged high-temperature use.

What is Black Polyimide Film?

Black polyimide film is a speciality variant of kapton-type polyimide film where carbon black pigment is compounded into the PMDA-ODA polymer during manufacture. The result is a fully opaque, light-blocking PI film that retains all the thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of standard polyimide film, while adding light blockage and enhanced EMI shielding from the carbon content.

Three grades are available: BX (25–50 μm, general purpose), BY (13–25 μm, ultra-thin) and BL (38–125 μm, thick high-voltage grade). Standard width is 620 mm.

What is black polyimide film and what is it used for?

Black polyimide film is an opaque kapton-type PI film with carbon black pigment compounded into the polymer. It provides complete light blockage (≤0.1% transmittance) and EMI shielding along with the same high-temperature performance as standard polyimide film. Used for high-temperature black tape, light-blocking coverlay, EMI shielding, industrial labels and motor/transformer insulation.

What is the difference between BX, BY and BL grades?

BY is ultra-thin (13–25 μm) with highest tensile strength (≥140 MPa) — for minimum thickness applications. BX is medium (25–50 μm) for general black tape and coverlay. BL is the thick grade (38–125 μm) with highest dielectric strength (≥6.5 kV) for heavier insulation applications. All three have transmittance ≤0.1%.

Is black polyimide film a kapton-type film?

Yes. Black polyimide film uses the same PMDA-ODA kapton-type polyimide base as standard HN film, with carbon black pigment added during manufacturing. It has the same temperature range (-269°C to 400°C) and similar electrical and mechanical properties.

Does the black colour fade at high temperature?

No. The black pigment is embedded in the polyimide polymer matrix during manufacture — not surface-coated or dyed. The colour is completely stable up to 400°C with no fading or colour transfer to adjacent materials.
