What is Aluminized Polyimide Film?

Aluminized polyimide film is a composite material where a thin layer of aluminium is deposited by physical vapour deposition (sputtering) onto a kapton-type polyimide film base. The result is a film with two functionally different sides: the aluminium side is electrically conductive and provides EMI shielding and thermal conductivity; the polyimide side is electrically insulating and provides the structural film layer with -269°C to 400°C temperature performance.

This combination makes aluminized polyimide film the standard material for spacecraft multi-layer insulation (MLI blankets), where multiple layers of aluminised kapton film are stacked to create highly effective thermal insulation for satellites and space vehicles.
