Description

Harnawa Insulations Private Limited is a leading Kapton polyimide film manufacturer in India, supplying the complete HN series of polyimide film (HN-05 to HN-10) for electrical insulation, flexible circuits, aerospace, automotive and industrial applications. Our HN polyimide film is a direct equivalent to Kapton HN film — the same PMDA-ODA chemistry, same dielectric strength up to 6000 V/mil, same operating range of -269°C to 400°C. Available in bulk rolls, custom slit widths and standard 520 mm width with pan-India delivery and export capability.

Whether you are searching for kapton film, PI film, or polyimide insulation film for motors, transformers, flexible PCBs or aerospace wiring — Harnawa supplies all grades directly from our Bhiwandi facility with no middlemen and fast lead times of 2–5 working days.

What is Kapton Polyimide Film?

Kapton polyimide film (also called PI film or polyimide insulation film) is a high-performance polymer film manufactured through the polymerization of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA). “Kapton” is DuPont’s registered trade name for this material — the generic industry name is polyimide film or PI film. The patent for Kapton has long expired, and manufacturers worldwide now produce equivalent polyimide films to the same specifications.

Polyimide film offers an outstanding balance of physical, chemical and electrical properties across an extreme temperature range. It has been successfully used in applications at temperatures as low as -269°C and as high as 400°C — a range no other flexible insulation film can match. This is why kapton-type polyimide film remains the industry standard for Class H and Class C motor and transformer insulation, flexible printed circuits and aerospace wiring worldwide.

Thermal Stability Continuous operation from -269°C to 400°C with excellent thermal aging resistance
Dielectric Strength Superior electrical insulation — dielectric strength up to 6000 V/mil (236 kV/mm)
Mechanical Properties High tensile strength up to 170 MPa with excellent flexibility and elongation
Chemical Resistance Resistant to solvents, oils, acids, alkalis and radiation
Flame Retardancy Self-extinguishing, UL 94 V-0 rated, halogen-free, RoHS/REACH compliant

Kapton Polyimide Film vs Standard PI Film — What is the Difference?

There is no material difference. Kapton film is DuPont’s brand name for PMDA-ODA polyimide film. When buyers in India search for “kapton film”, “kapton polyimide film”, “kapton type film” or simply “PI film”, they are all referring to the same material. Harnawa’s HN Polyimide Film is manufactured to equivalent specifications — same PMDA-ODA chemistry, same dielectric strength, same temperature range. The advantage of sourcing from Harnawa is direct manufacturing pricing, pan-India supply from Bhiwandi, and no DuPont import premium.

For technical comparison, the internationally recognised standard for this material is DuPont Kapton HN. Our HN polyimide film meets or exceeds the published Kapton HN datasheet values for all key parameters.

Polyimide Film Types & Grades — Full Range

Harnawa manufactures the complete range of polyimide film grades. HN Series (highlighted below) is the standard general-purpose kapton-type PI film. Other grades are engineered for specific applications:

Grade / Series Type Code Description & Key Use
HN Series — This Product Standard General purpose kapton-type polyimide film, 0.5–10 mil. High dielectric strength, high-temperature and chemical resistance. Direct equivalent to Kapton HN.
FEP Coated Film FH / FHF FEP fluoropolymer coated polyimide film — one or both sides — for heat sealability, moisture barrier and enhanced chemical resistance.
Black PI Film BX / BY / BL Opaque black polyimide film, light-blocking, 13–125 μm. Excellent EMI shielding for hi-temp tape, labels and coverlay.
ESD PI Film Functional Anti-static polyimide film for PCB protection during wave soldering. ESD surface resistance: 10⁵–10⁹ Ω. No adhesive residue.
Aluminized PI Film Functional Sputtered aluminium on polyimide film for EMI shielding and thermal conductivity. Thickness: 25–250 μm.
CR Film CR / FCR / FCRF Corona Resistant polyimide film with ≥80 hr corona resistance. For inverter duty motors and VFD-fed equipment.
Thermal-Conductive MT Series Polyimide film with enhanced thermal conductivity (>0.36 W/m·K) for LED modules, power electronics and EV batteries.
NHN Composite Laminate Non-woven paper / polyimide film / non-woven paper laminate. 0.15–0.35 mm. Breakdown voltage: 8–10 kV.
Colourful PI Film Specialty Red, Green and Transparent polyimide film — colour-stable at high temperature. 25–50 μm.
Voice Coil Film Specialty High dimensional stability polyimide film for loudspeaker voice coil formers. 25–125 μm.

HN Polyimide Film — Kapton Type Specifications

The HN designation — same as Kapton HN — refers to the standard amber-coloured PMDA-ODA polyimide film that is the global baseline for PI film performance. HN polyimide film is produced as a smooth, amber-coloured, translucent sheet. Unlike most polymer films that soften or degrade at elevated temperatures, HN polyimide film maintains its electrical, mechanical and dimensional properties from cryogenic temperatures (-269°C) all the way up to 400°C.

HN Series spans from HN-05 (0.5 mil / 12.5 μm) to HN-10 (10 mil / 250 μm). Dielectric strength ranges from 6000 V/mil for thin grades down to 3000 V/mil for thick grades — all with the same 24,000 psi tensile strength throughout the range. This consistency is a key advantage of kapton-type polyimide film over other insulation materials.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Kapton-Equivalent Performance: Direct replacement for DuPont Kapton HN — same PMDA-ODA chemistry and all published performance values
  • High Dielectric Strength: Up to 6000 V/mil — reliable high-voltage electrical insulation
  • Widest Temperature Range: -269°C to +400°C continuous — no other flexible film matches this range
